Reports to: Assistant Superintendent

Telecommuting Eligibility: School-based. Not eligible for telecommuting. 

Position Summary:

The DPSCD Virtual School offers a synchronous (live) instructional program for students in grades 2-12 using DPSCD curricular resources. The Principal for the Virtual School in DPSCD is responsible for ensuring rigorous and standards-aligned synchronous virtual teaching and learning. The Principal of the Virtual School must be able to establish a positive culture for students, staff and families and provide visionary leadership. The Principal manages all aspects of the school-level budgeting process, as well as efforts to drive school improvement and oversees daily school operations. The Principal ensures there is collaborative, two-way communication between families and staff and seeks out feedback from the community on ways to improve the school community. The Principal supervises and evaluates school personnel and provides regular feedback and professional learning opportunities to drive improvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a master’s degree inclusive of 20 semester hours in school administration, supervision, curriculum, and school finance. 
    • In the absence of the school finance course work, candidates must show demonstrated experience developing and managing staff and operating budgets 
  • Must possess a valid Michigan teacher certificate
  • Must possess and provide evidence of Michigan administrator certification
  • A minimum of five (5) years certified contract-teaching experience with a demonstrated proficiency at or above performance at the secondary level.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of adult and child learning theory. 
  • Must possess in-depth knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

Essential Functions:

  1. Implement all expectations of school operations format.
  2. Maintain a positive learning environment that ensures the implementation of quality instruction as outlined by the current curriculum.
  3. Create a shared vision of high-quality teaching and learning.
  4. Align standards, instructional strategies, assessment, instructional tools/resources, and professional development to ensure instructional program coherence.
  5. Develop an academic plan based on a continuous improvement model; conduct a comprehensive review of quantitative and qualitative data relative to teaching and learning and use to support development of academic plan; create benchmark growth measures to monitor progress toward meeting performance goals.
  6. Conduct regular formative and summative staff evaluations to ensure continuous improvement in teaching and learning and maintain high levels of accountability.
  7. Create the necessary structures and systems required to support successful implementation of the instructional program.
  8. Create and maintain a safe, effective, and clean learning environment.
  9. Develop and manage a school budget, aligned to the school academic plan, that reflects District, State, and Federal mandates.
  10. Create a formative and summative evaluation process to monitor student progress.
  11. Develop and implement a comprehensive professional development program based on teacher instructional practice and student learning needs.
  12. Effectively coordinate, supervise, and manage relations with parents/families, the immediate school and the broader external community.
  13. Develop a comprehensive schoolwide discipline plan that includes the use of restorative practices. 
  14. Acquire and effectively manage resources outside of district allotted support.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance.
