Position Title:  Security Officer (39-week)

Salary: $16.00/hr.

Reports to: Lieutenant Security Support or Designee

Bargaining Unit: N/A

Telecommuting Eligibility: Not eligible for telecommuting.


Position Summary: The Security Officer works to protect students, staff and school property by patrolling buildings both while classes and activities are being conducted. Works to maintain order and prevent and control incidents of violence directed at students, staff and school facilities by patrolling the interior and exterior of the building. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  •  High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.
  • Evidence of college credits in Criminal Justice from an accredited college or university is preferred.  

Essential Functions

  1. Protect pupils, staff and school property by patrolling buildings while classes and activities are being conducted and when buildings are closed.
  2. Maintain order at school grounds and buildings while classes and activities are being conducted; prevent and control incidents of violence directed against school facilities, pupils or staff.
  3. Make immediate on-site investigations of crimes or offenses and assist police in collecting evidence; witness and testify in court as may be required.
  4. Patrol interior and exterior of building site.
  5. Pursue perpetrators who commit infractions in and around schools.
  6. Must write detailed reports, maintain a daily log, prepare court documents and provide court testimony.
  7. Exercise reasonable force to effectively detain undesirable persons.
  8. Apply self-defense skills when appropriate.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
