Position Title: LEIN/Commnications Operator  (LCO)  

Location: Department of Public Safety Headquarters 8500 Cameron  

Salary: $20.00/hr  

Reports to: Commanding officer of Communications  

Bargaining Unit: Teamsters

In accordance with the Agreement between The Teamsters and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary: 

This is highly responsible shift work, involving the operation of modern communications equipment, including computers, radios, and telephones. Employees receive emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls, complaints, and inquiries from the public, evaluate and dispatch police, fire and emergency medical services. The work of this division is maintained twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, including weekends and holidays. Employees are assigned to work day, afternoon and midnight shifts, including weekends and holidays. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma 

  • Ability to operate job-related equipment such as telephone, computer, MANITU Alarm/dispatching system 

  • Knowledge of proper and safe use of custodial equipment, chemicals, tools, etc. 

  • Ability to work dayshift, afternoons, or midnights. 

 Essential Functions:

  1. Receives and transmits messages to and from police, fire and emergency medical units, as well as other local government and municipal communications units via two-way radio. 

  1. Receives enhanced 9-1-1 emergency telephone calls for service; evaluates situation to determine appropriate response, and dispatches and advises appropriate response unit. 

  1. Provides Emergency Medical Dispatching services. 

  1. Communicates effectively with people of varying language and communications abilities. 

  1. Communicates effectively during stressful telephone contacts, dealing effectively with hysterical, injured or disoriented callers. 

  1. Operates the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System and Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) using keyboard device in conjunction with dispatching police units. 

  1. Operates the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) computer system via keyboard. 

  1. Participates in the Emergency Response Unit requiring on-call emergency response. 

  1. Works shift assignments including frequent weekends and holidays. 

  1. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance. 

  1. Ability to operate two-way radio and multiple line telephone equipment in order to send and receive both emergency and non-emergency communications. 

  1. Ability to discern voice and other auditory signals as necessary in receiving telephone and radio communications. 

  1. Ability to perform functions efficiently and effectively while maintaining an appropriate level of professionalism during stressful, high volume work periods. 

  1. Ability to communicate verbally in English using appropriate grammar and diction; knowledge of Arabic and Spanish language helpful. 

  1. Ability to deal with multiple demands simultaneously, to prioritize and adjust priorities as needed. 

  1. Ability to operate a microcomputer or terminal keyboard. 

  1. Ability to discern a range of colors on a color computer monitor 

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check. 

External Applicants 

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
