Reports to: Senior Director of Facilities, Maintenance, and Engineering and Building Administrator 

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME

In accordance with the Agreement between American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary 

The DPSCD is seeking an experienced individual(s) to fill the above stated lead custodian position. The individual(s) must have a strong desire to assist the District in maintaining a clean and safe environment for students enrolled in various school locations. 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Candidates for this position must be a high school graduate or provide proof of GED certificate. 

  • If there is no successful candidate available who holds a valid Michigan (Interim) Occupation Education Certificate, candidate must have a minimum of two (2) years or 4000 hours of related work experience in the designated industry. Candidates may be considered for a waiver if work experience does not meet the 4000-hour requirement. Experience must be within 6 years of application.  The right candidate must be student-focused and foster a positive student-learning environment including: 

  • Knowledge and expertise in the use of custodial equipment and floor care machines 

  • Skills in communicating with students, their parents, administrators, and others. 

  • Skills in supervising custodian teams. 

  • Technology competency.  Knowledge of and skills in the use of the internet, spreadsheet, and related applications. 

  • Flexibility and willingness to learn and accept changes in job duties 

  • Computer proficiency: Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook. 

  • Proficiency in reading and understanding hazards associated with storage and use of chemicals. 

  • Knowledge of best practices and regulations guiding the use of cleaning supplies and equipment. 

Essential Functions 

  1. Report to the Building Administrator, Principal or Director  

  1. Train, supervise and evaluate custodial personnel in the performance of their assigned duties and responsibilities.  

  1. Maintain housekeeping standards particularly in the areas of the dining room or commons, restrooms and grounds. 

  1. Keep custodial equipment in working order, maintain inventory, order supplies and materials, (i.e., chemicals, paper, plastic can liners, and work personal protective equipment (PPE) for building custodial support team.)  

  1. Coordinate the set-up of Community Use and arrange for personnel to be present in support of the event.  

  1. Conduct weekly inspection of buildings with Building or School Administrator to assess quality of custodian performance and cleanliness standards. 

  1. Conduct independent quality assurance inspections of custodial team’s performance. 

  1. Work to remediate/eliminate contributory conditions that facilitate the presence of pests. 

  1. Monitor absenteeism of building custodial personnel and recommend action.  

  1. Other general duties include cleaning, mopping, lifting, sweeping, trash collection, snow removal, lifting, climbing ladders, dusting, grounds care and disposal of waste from classrooms, lavatories and lunchroom in support of other custodial staff efforts to maintain a clean learning and working environment 

  1. Must maintain annual training in AHERA, Blood borne Pathogens, and IPM 

  1. Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director of Facilities, Maintenance, and Engineering (or Designee) 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
